Dr. Porter was born in Louisville, Kentucky and grew up in Daytona Beach, Florida. After graduation from high school he entered the United States Army and rose to the rank of Captain in the Infantry Branch. He is a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War. After his military service Dr. Porter attended The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina School of Medicine under a full scholarship from the United States Navy. After graduation he returned to active duty and completed an internship in General Surgery and a residency in Anesthesiology at the US Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California. He served in several duty stations throughout the United States and was deployed aboard the USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 in 1982. Dr. Porter’s last assignment before retirement was as the Chief of Anesthesiology at the US Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Dr. Porter entered private practice in Houston, Texas in 1989 and continued his private practice until 2013 when he joined the faculty of The University of Texas Medical Branch. He is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and is a Fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologists. He is also a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
