Dr. Levy was born and raised in New York City and attended college at the University of Rochester. After working for several years in cardiovascular research, he went to medical school at the Sackler
School of Medicine. Upon graduation, he started a surgery residency at Brookdale Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. After 4 years at Brookdale and another year and a half of surgery at Maimonides Medical Center, Dr.
Levy switched to anesthesiology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. After completing his residency, Dr. Levy accepted a position as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at UTMB.
Since coming to the University, Dr. Levy has taken on several roles in addition to his clinical and teaching responsibilities. Having studied computer programming throughout college and beyond, Dr. Levy developed
and maintains the departmental web site. He has also created two commercially available programs, one of which is an ICU database management system currently being used by several medical centers in the
Northeast. In September, 2001, Dr. Levy was asked to plan, design, budget and eventually be the Director of the Patient Simulation Center. The Center opened in March of 2002 and has been used regularly since
then for Crisis Resource Management training, airway workshops and basic resident and medical student teaching. The center and its staff has been featured on KPRC (CBS) news and in the local press.
Under Dr. Levy's guidance, the center became the first sim center in the country to be endorsed by the ASA to offer simulation courses as part of the MOCA recertification process for anesthesiologists.
In recent years, Dr. Levy has served on the Board of Directors for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and was a Co-chair of the International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare in 2012. This is the largest international meeting of simulation experts with over 3000 attendees.
